Ford 1.0 EcoBoost — Wet Belt vs Timing Chain: When the Change Happened, Which Models, and How to Tell
If you own or are shopping for a Ford with the 1.0 EcoBoost, you've likely heard about the wet timing belt. From 2018 into 2019, Ford rolled out a revised 1.0 EcoBoost with cylinder deactivation, a reversed-flow head (turbo moved to the firewall), and crucially a timing chain for the main cam drive. How to Spot the Difference Under the Bonnet
Pre-2018 Wet-Belt Engine Wet belt
- Turbo mounted at the front of the engine, facing the radiator
- Conventional (non-reversed) cylinder head layout
- Main camshaft drive is a wetted rubber belt, running inside the timing cover in engine oil
- The engine most commonly associated with belt shedding and oil pickup blockages
2018/2019 Revised Chain Engine Chain
- Turbo mounted at the rear, facing the bulkhead/firewall
- Reversed-flow cylinder head (inlet at the front, exhaust at the back)
- Main camshaft drive is a timing chain, designed to last the life of the engine
- Includes cylinder deactivation, shutting down one cylinder under light load to save fuel
How To Check Your Exact Engine
The 2018/2019 changeover didn't happen on a single fixed date across every model and market — some models picked up the revised engine earlier than others, and facelift/run-out stock means the registration year alone isn't always reliable. If you want certainty:

- 🔍 Check your V5C or Ford's own VIN lookup for the exact engine/build data where available.
- 🔍 Ask a specialist to confirm before booking a wet belt job. There's no point paying for a wet belt replacement on an engine that turns out to be chain-driven, or vice versa.

Engine codes for both generations overlap across parts catalogues and timing tool listings, which makes codes alone an unreliable way to identify your engine. Turbo position, VIN confirmation, or a specialist check are far more dependable.
What About the Oil Pump Belt?
Signs a Wet Belt Needs Attention
- ⚠️ Oil pressure warning light — stop and investigate immediately, don't keep driving because the engine still sounds fine.
- ⚠️ Rattling or knocking noise from the front of the engine, especially on cold start.
- ⚠️ Metallic sheen or debris visible on the dipstick or in the oil at a service.
- ⚠️ Reduced engine performance or misfires, which can indicate the belt has started to slip.
- ⚠️ No belt replacement on file and the car is approaching 8 years old or 75,000–100,000 miles.

Yes. All 48V mild hybrids require the revised engine layout (chain-driven) because the belt-alternator starter motor packaging would clash with the old turbo-at-front design.
It's not a straight swap. Mounts, ECU coding, ancillaries and wiring differ between the two generations, so it's far more practical to replace the timing system like-for-like rather than swap engines.
Not listed as a fixed service item by Ford. Failures are rare compared to the main wet cam belt, but keeping oil changes frequent and using the correct grade minimises the risk.

I don’t think they’ll ever make a chain kit for the older 1.0 EcoBoost wetbelt engines. The engines were designed around the belt system, so changing it to a chain would mean completely re-engineering parts of the engine. The cost and complexity just wouldn’t make sense compared to simply replacing the wetbelt at the correct interval.

So the newer 1.0 ecoboost still has a wet belt but it’s just the oil pump belt? I didn’t know that, do they fail too?
Yeah they still have oil pump belt, but the cam drive is a chain on the newer ecoboost. They can fail, the automatic versions were really bad and would strip all the teeth on the oil pump belt, but I think fords recalled them. The manual ones seem to be okay. But my advice is to regularly get your oil change

What is the service schedule for the oil pump belt?
Ford don’t list it as a service item, but oil neglect can shorten its life.
When did Ford realise there was a problem with this wet belt before they abandoned it for a chain?
Did Ford in the US run a recall on these engines?
Ford had warranty claims and failures showing up from as early as 2016, but the first formal internal review was in 2022, and by late 2023 they issued a recall there for the oil pump drive belt and tensioner. In my opinion, Ford probably knew the design was problematic a few years before the official changeover — the decision to move back to a timing chain around 2019–2020 suggests they had already accepted that the wet belt system wasn’t living up to expectations.
I don’t think they recalled the 1.0 ecoboost in any Country but they did recall some focus’s and Ecosports over the the oil pump belt failure on automatics
My daughter has a 2018 Grand C-Max with a 1.0 ecoboost. Turbo is at the back so I assume this is the timing chain version. Do any of the welbelt engines have the turbo at the back?

Does a 2022 ford ecosport have a wet belt?
By 2022, many 1.0L EcoBoost engines (often called the "Dragon" engine) switched to a timing chain to drive the camshafts. This is a major improvement over the older rubber belt.
But the oil pump remains a wet belt. Even on the newer chain-driven engines, the oil pump is driven by a rubber belt submerged in oil inside the engine.

No, the belt itself doesn't wear out faster just because you have an automatic. But I know they did recall some of the Ecoboosts automatics as the oil pump belt broke up

Yeah, if you see the photos above they show both types. With the bonnet open you should be able to match it to one of them photos.

Yeah that’s really late for the older style of engine. You are right it is the older engine with the Wetbelt. With that little miles I wouldn’t worry about wetbelt for now

It could possibly be the newer engine being that it’s 2018. But the best thing to do is open the bonnet and have a look and compare the pictures above.
Looking to purchase a 2018 1.0 ford c max eco boost petrol from a ford dealership. It’s £7495 1 owner and done 42000 serviced every year by ford. They are also offering 2 years warranty and breakdown with this car. Just found out about the wet belt issues and now not so confident about buying please can you offer some advice.
If it has been regularly serviced they do tend to last the distance. We recommend changing it at 75k just for peace of mind. We are doing belts daily at the moment and most of them are in good condition. They do go wrong but if it has been serviced regularly I would still buy one. The engine is really reliable with enough power and cheap road tax.

One follow-up - does Ford's June customer satisfaction programme on the 1.0 EcoBoost apply to the chain cars at all, given they still have the oil pump wet belt? Or is it only the older cam belt engines? And is there anything you'd recommend doing preventatively on the oil pump belt at 57k, or just keep the oil changes up?
I believe it’s only the older engine. They did recall the automatic newer engines as the belts were failing but the apart from that we haven’t seen any issues with the oil pump belts.
